Once the implementation is complete, users can initiate chats using a username, maintaining the privacy of their phone numbers.
To create a username, users can generate a unique handle within the app. If someone wishes to contact them, only the specific username is required, as phone numbers will remain concealed. In cases where a chosen username is already in use, WhatsApp will provide alternative suggestions through an integrated generator. Importantly, there will be no public directory for usernames, meaning users cannot be randomly searched. Only individuals who know the exact username will have the ability to start a conversation.
Users interested in reserving a username can check its availability by updating their app and navigating to: Settings → Account → Username. Given WhatsApp’s extensive user base, with billions of users worldwide, popular usernames are expected to be highly competitive. The platform will notify users when this feature becomes accessible in their specific regions.
Additionally, the system will offer an optional “username key,” serving as an extra layer of security. This key can be shared separately by users, granting them control over who can initiate contact. The new feature is intended to benefit not just personal users, but also creators, businesses, and public accounts by allowing them to harmonize their WhatsApp identity with existing profiles on other platforms like Instagram and Facebook.
WhatsApp has clarified that adopting a username is optional. Those who prefer to stick with phone numbers can continue using them as before. Users will receive in-app notifications as the feature becomes progressively available in various regions.
