The U.S. aviation authorities have mandated inspections on Boeing 737 Max aircraft to check for potential cracks in a key structural component of the fuselage. This directive applies to around 471 planes, with inspections set to commence in September. The focus of these inspections is on a part known as the bear strap, which comprises structural sheets that support the fuselage near exit doors. This action follows the discovery of similar cracks in older Boeing 737 Next Generation models, which had already led to checks of those aircraft.
While the 737 Max fleet has not yet reported any such cracks, aviation regulators have highlighted that the aircraft shares a similar design and manufacturing process with its predecessor, suggesting a potential risk for the same issue to arise. They cautioned that any undetected cracks might compromise a significant structural element of the aircraft, thereby possibly undermining its overall structural integrity.
Boeing has acknowledged this concern and has been collaborating with airlines since the issue was first identified in 2019.
