Iran has raised accusations against Qatar, claiming that it is impeding efforts to uncover the whereabouts of three Iranian pilots who went missing during a recent conflict. These allegations have been firmly denied by Qatar, which has stated that it is not detaining the pilots. According to Iranian armed forces official Mohammad Bagherzadeh, an expert team from the Iranian Air Force has been awaiting permission for several months to travel to Qatar to investigate the situation. Bagherzadeh has called on Doha to facilitate the investigation and urged the International Committee of the Red Cross to become involved in the matter.
In a previous statement, Iran confirmed it had retrieved the body of pilot Majid Kazemi, who was reportedly killed during an assault involving the US’s Al Udeid Air Base located in Qatar. Meanwhile, Majed al-Ansari, a spokesperson for Qatar’s Foreign Ministry, has strongly refuted claims that Iranian pilots are being held in the country. He explained that Qatar had made contact with the pilots following their alleged violation of Qatari airspace. Defensive actions were taken only after attempts to communicate with the pilots were met with silence.
Qatar has detailed its actions in response, stating that its search and rescue teams conducted operations aimed at locating both the pilots and any remains. Furthermore, Doha has emphasized its cooperation with Iran, noting the successful coordination over the transfer of the remains of one recovered pilot. Qatar asserts that Iranian officials were invited back in April to send a team to Qatar for the purpose of receiving information related to the search and rescue mission, yet there has been no response to this invitation from Iran.
This ongoing dispute emerges amid persistent tensions between Iran, the United States, and other regional powers following the conflict that erupted earlier this year. Amid these tensions, Qatar has been recognized for playing a significant diplomatic role, aiming to de-escalate the situation and improve lines of communication among the involved parties.
