In a significant development, Iran has announced a potential suspension of peace talks with the United States, citing alleged violations of a ceasefire agreement by Israel through its military operations in Lebanon. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi emphasized that the ceasefire should be respected across all fronts, including Lebanon, and warned that any infringement would be viewed as a breach of the entire pact. Tehran holds both Israel and the United States accountable for any repercussions stemming from renewed hostilities.
Reacting to Iran’s stance, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington had not yet received formal notification of Iran’s intent to pause negotiations. However, he indicated that such a break might be tolerable. Trump assured that the U.S. would continue its blockade on Iranian ports but would avoid an immediate military escalation. Meanwhile, efforts to uphold the ceasefire were ongoing, with Trump engaging in talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and intermediaries associated with Hezbollah.
Subsequently, Lebanon confirmed that Israel and Hezbollah had reached an agreement to cease attacks, including strikes on the southern suburbs of Beirut. Nonetheless, Netanyahu issued a stern warning that Israel would persist in targeting Hezbollah if attacks on Israeli civilians did not cease. Tensions further escalated when Israel issued evacuation alerts for parts of Beirut, prompting a reaction from Iran, which warned that any significant Israeli attack on the Lebanese capital or its southern suburbs would provoke retaliatory strikes inside Israel.
Iranian officials have also accused the United States of not fulfilling its ceasefire commitments, pointing to ongoing economic pressures and military activities. Tehran has signaled that future negotiations, particularly those concerning its nuclear program, will remain stalled until more comprehensive security issues are addressed. The rising tensions have added to the uncertainty in the region and have exerted renewed pressure on global oil markets.
