Qatar triumphed over Bahrain with a 2-0 win in the opening match of the 27th Arabian Gulf Cup on Thursday at Prince Abdullah Al Faisal Stadium in Jeddah. This victory marks a strong start for Qatar against the defending champions.
The breakthrough came in the 61st minute when Boualem Khoukhi scored with a header from an Akram Afif free-kick delivery. However, the match took a challenging turn for Qatar as they were reduced to 10 men in the 70th minute following Ahmed Fathi’s second yellow card.
Despite the numerical advantage, Bahrain could not capitalize and find an equalizer. Qatar extended their lead in the ninth minute of stoppage time when Hassan Al Haydos successfully converted a penalty after being fouled inside the box.
This result places Qatar second in Group B, trailing the United Arab Emirates, who earlier defeated Yemen 4-0. Looking ahead, Qatar will face Yemen in their next group fixture, while Bahrain is set to compete against the UAE, endeavoring to improve their standing in the tournament.
