Anwar Gargash, a diplomatic adviser from the United Arab Emirates, has criticized Iran’s strategy of targeting Gulf states and Jordan, labeling it ineffective. He emphasized the need for realistic and sustainable political solutions to resolve the ongoing regional conflict. Gargash highlighted the unsustainable nature of the current state of “neither war nor peace” and called for immediate measures to reduce tensions. He also stressed the importance of restoring normal navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy markets.
His remarks follow a resurgence of Iranian attacks on regional targets amid escalating tensions between Tehran and Washington. On August 31, the UAE Ministry of Defence announced the interception of an Iranian drone over the country’s territorial waters. The ministry also dismissed Iranian media claims that Al Minhad Air Base near Dubai was struck by missiles, asserting the facility’s continued high state of readiness.
Gargash elaborated that any enduring resolution must consider both the political and economic ramifications of the conflict. He criticized a prior memorandum of understanding for its failure to outline a practical and acceptable roadmap for crisis resolution. The ongoing disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, which remains a central point of contention, pose significant risks to regional economies and the global energy supply chain.
Recent hostilities and retaliatory actions have further strained efforts to restore maritime traffic and renew diplomatic engagements.
