As a parent, you are the captain of your family’s travel experience. A successful flight requires a clear plan and the right equipment on board. By taking command of your carry-on preparations, you can navigate the challenges of long-haul travel with authority and ensure a smooth journey for your entire crew. Here are six commands every parent-captain should follow.
First, Command Your Provisions. You are in charge of fueling your crew. A well-stocked galley with a variety of snacks and ample water is essential for maintaining morale. Do not delegate this critical task to the in-flight service. A happy crew starts with a happy stomach.
Second, Manage Onboard Morale. As captain, it is your duty to prevent mutiny caused by boredom. Deploy a diverse range of entertainment options. Your primary system is electronic (a tablet with headphones), but have manual backups like books and games ready to engage your crew throughout the long voyage.
Third, Ensure Crew Comfort. A comfortable crew is a compliant crew. Issue standard comfort gear, including blankets and pillows, to create a restful environment in your designated cabin space. Mandate a backup uniform (a change of clothes) for each junior crew member in case of operational spills.
Fourth, Maintain a Med-Bay. Your vessel must have a med-bay, even if it’s a small one. A compact first-aid kit with remedies for common ailments ensures you are prepared for minor medical situations that may arise during your journey.
Fifth and sixth, Secure Your Ship’s Papers and Power. All critical documents, your ship’s papers, must be kept in a secure and organized command pouch. Furthermore, your ship’s systems, especially communication and entertainment, must remain powered. A portable power bank is your vessel’s auxiliary generator and is mission-critical.
Before you board, take a picture of your carry-on luggage. If you accidentally leave it behind on the plane or at the gate, having a photo makes it significantly easier to describe accurately to airline staff, increasing the chances of a quick recovery.
